Selecting Fine Motor Gifts To Enhance The Skills Development In The...

Terrific Two

Fine motor development at this age allows your child to...

  • hold crayons and pencils with her thumb and all her fingers; not just in her fist.
  • dump containers of toys...or cereal.
  • stack a 9-block tower.
  • tear paper.
  • twist and turn jar and bottle lids; nut and bolts.
  • make vertical, horizontal and circular motions in finger paint or attempt them with a pencil or crayon.
  • snip paper with scissors.
  • help with her own dressing by taking off her T-shirt, unsnapping snaps, unbuttoning buttons...if they're large and in front.
  • put on a front-opening shirt or coat.
  • take off all clothing...if you unfasten everything first.
  • flush the toilet..if you remind him.
  • wash her hands, but she'll need some help with the soap.
  • turn the faucet on and off...with caution about hot water.
  • bathe himself with your help.
  • brush her teeth with assistance.

So what gifts, toys, or activities enhance the development of these skills?

Play-Doh Case of Colors provides multiple colors for him to squeeze, pat and roll. This strengthens those fingers he needs for paper pencil skills when he starts to kindergarten. But that's three years away! Yes, but this gives him some much needed practice.

Ryan's Room Sort & Roll provides eye-hand coordination practice. Selecting a three-piece geometric puzzle cuts down on frustration as he learns to rotate pieces to slip into the holes.

This "dress-me" teddy bear allows her unlimited practice with dressing herself.

Next let's examine the skills this independent-minded child develops as a Tantalizing Three.
