What Vision Gifts Best Enrich The Visual Development Of the Fantastic Five?

He’s a Kindergartner! Many of the toys and activities he enjoyed as a four-year-old, he’ll enjoy now, too. Are there others? Sure…

Books...you knew I’d say that, didn’t you. Who knows, she may even be able to read a word or two. She’ll at least be able to supply the missing word in a rhyming book…especially if he’s practically memorized it because you’ve read it so much. Dr. Seus's books capture the interests of children with his creative rhyming works.

This is a good time to ask him questions about the details in the pictures she sees: What season of the year is it? How do you think someone feels? What do think is about to happen?

Puzzles…6 to 16-piece jigsaw puzzle, or even a 16-piece puzzle without the “jigs.” Here’s one you could use to personalize with his picture.

Building Sets such as Legos…Tinker Toys…Lincoln Logs…these further refine eye-hand coordination. Our sons thoroughly enjoyed crafting a variety of designs with these gifts.

Arts and Crafts…She wasn’t interested in play dough at four? She may be now.

Interactive Software Programs…already into computers?! Sure. He’s going to be a high-tech kid. Children are not afraid of computers.

If you choose not to homeschool, you’ll want to be involved in his school. Most schools welcome volunteers. Just check with them on their policies. Reinforcing what he learns at school also keeps you involved.

We’re at the end of the preschool journey. I’ve enjoyed having you along, and I hope you’ve enjoyed my company as well.

During this adventure we’ve learned that visual development includes more than just how clearly he sees details.

We’ve learned that vision assists and directs all kinds of activities…completing puzzles, drawing, scribbling, finding or matching objects, imitating actions.

It enables him to identify people, pictures, and objects. It helps him recognize a change in his environment. When you ask him to get something for you, vision helps him to remember it; then find it. One of the most important things vision makes possible is…reading. His brain deciphers those black straight, curved, and squiggly lines he sees on paper as…words!

And then a whole new world opens up for him.
