Language Gifts To Enrich The Development Of The...Tantalizing Three

Her listening vocabulary may be a whopping 900 to 1200 words! Her expressive language grows as well. She strings one to three words together to tell you something or ask for something.

She loves for you to read to her…the same stories over and over and over. She may even remember three things in a story.

Loves to ask “why?” and wants to know “how?” You’ll get a chance to answer those questions many times over.

Often, she’ll stump you with a profound one.

She may be able to tell her first and last name.

She can tell you the order an event happened, even if you didn’t see it. She enjoys talking about friends with whom she’s interacted. So it’s good to encourage this socialization.

So what toys or gifts can you select that further encourages this phase of her development…especially her expressive language (getting those words from the mind and out of the mouth)?

Books…All kinds. Good choices...Dr. Seuss books, Winnie the Pooh, just to name a few. Books on CD or DVD also provide another type. Talk with her and encourage her to say words as you read. Ask about details in the pictures.

Dr. Seuss

Winnie the Pooh

Hungry Caterpillar

Play sets…These pictures give you an idea of playsets to select. They don't have to be expensive. One cautionary note...Some sets say "Not appropriate for children under the age of three."

Cooking Play Set

Animal Set

Thomas the Train

DVDs…such as the ones pictured below of Baby Einstein, The Letter Factory and DoraThe Explorer Adventures

Baby Einstein Colors

The Letter Factory

Dora's Rhymes & Riddles

Live interaction, in my opinion, is better than TV, CD, or DVD…HOWEVER, I know that there are times when you need her to be occupied so you can get something done!

Continue getting together with your friends and their children for social interaction.

Three was a wonderful age, but so is four!
