Which Language Gifts Best Enhance The Development Of...The Terrific Two

Whew! Language acquisition is no easy task, but already your two-year old may understand as many as 300 words. Before she’s three, her understanding may increase to 500 words!

She’s beginning to understand that a toothbrush is for brushing teeth and keys mean a ride in the car.

He can even follow directions involving two parts, such as “Pick up your socks and bring them to me.”

Her expressive language grows as she uses words to express needs, name objects and ask for help. You may be able to understand her words, but others may not.

It’s no easy task for her to learn how to make her mouth make the correct sound.

He may refer to himself by his name or the pronoun “me” as in “Me go potty.” But before he’s three he’s beginning to use “I,” “me,” or “my” instead of his own name.

She’s beginning to understand the meaning of “in,” “on,” “under,” “in front of,” “in back of,” “around.”

Plurals have meaning to her now…block vs. blocks.

He may even begin asking questions beginning with “what” and “where.”

So what’s appropriate for this young child whose language is exploding?

Books...They can have more complex stories. You may want to choose some to teach manners. Dora's Book of Manners serves this purpose nicely.

Books also address fears or concerns you may have noticed your child expressing. This book helps.

While she may not fully comprehend everything, this exposes her to the concepts. The more you read to her, the more she will understand.

You'll want to read some books to him just for the fun they are. Who hasn't loved the lilting poetry and absurd situations that Dr. Seuss employs.

Imaginative play encourages language and cognitive development. Here are just a few suggestions to enhance this aspect of development...telephone or cell phone...even a remote control!

Play sets that include home living concepts, tools, dolls, dress-up clothes, puppets and tabletop puppet theater.

Socialization Activities Children love other children. Even though they show reserve with adults they don't know, not so with children they don't know. Encourage socialization. So...

Invite your friends and their children over or meet at a playground for this fun activity for your children. BIG PLUS, you’ll get to engage in some adult conversation.
