Which Language Gifts Best Enhance The Development Of...

Terrific Two

Whew! Language acquisition is no easy task, but already your two-year old may understand as many as 300 words. Before she’s three, her understanding may increase to 500 words!

She’s beginning to understand that a toothbrush is for brushing teeth and keys mean a ride in the car.

He can even follow directions involving two parts, such as “Pick up your socks and bring them to me.”

Her expressive language grows as she uses words to express needs, name objects and ask for help. You may be able to understand her words, but others may not.

It’s no easy task for her to learn how to make her mouth make the correct sound.

He may refer to himself by his name or the pronoun “me” as in “Me go potty.” But before he’s three he’s beginning to use “I,” “me,” or “my” instead of his own name.

She’s beginning to understand the meaning of “in,” “on,” “under,” “in front of,” “in back of,” “around.”

Plurals have meaning to her now…block vs. blocks.

He may even begin asking questions beginning with “what” and “where.”

So what’s appropriate for this young child whose language is exploding?

Book of Manners

I Can Be Your Friend

Stand Up

Books...They can have more complex stories. You may want to choose some to teach values and manners. Books also address fears or concerns you may have noticed your child expressing. While she may not fully comprehend everything, this exposes her to the concepts. The more ou read to her, the more she will understand.

You'll want to read some books to him just for the fun they are. Who hasn't loved the lilting poetry and absurd situations that Dr. Seuss employs.

Imaginative play…probably enhances language and cognitive development as well as anything. Toys or gifts that encourage this are a telephone or cell phone...even a remote control...play sets that include home living concepts, tools, dolls, dress-up clothes, puppets and puppet theaters. Here are just a few suggestions...

Socialization Activities Children love other children. Even if they show reserve with adults they don't know, that's not usually the way it is with children they don't know. It's also good to encourage socialization with other children. So...

Invite your friends and their children over or meet at a playground for this fun activity for your children. BIG PLUS, you’ll get to engage in some adult conversation.

You can’t believe how much she’s talking now, and it just gets better when she’s a tantalizing three....
