What Gifts Enhance The Gross Motor Development Of The...

Fantastic Five

What do we know about the gross motor development of the five-year-old?

What do we know about the gross motor development of the five-year-old?

Well, these are some of the things you can expect:

  • He can stay in line as he walks to recess and lunch.
  • She runs farther and faster, and new shoes always help!
  • He skips with alternating feet.
  • She jumps rope by herself.
  • He’s learned to swing, maybe even getting himself started.
  • She might be into T-ball because she can hit the ball with a bat.
  • He’s graduated from a tricycle to a bike with training wheels.
  • She keeps her balance while roller skating.
  • He’s becoming more coordinated by combining several motor skills in one activity.

Okay, so what gifts and activities will appeal to and enhance this aspect of your child's development?

He might like to play Duck, Duck, Goose, Hide the Handkerchief, or any number of games.

Now that you have the activities that are available, what about gift suggestions? Here are a few:

A Bicycle builds large muscle activity as well as balance.

Camping and hiking gear encourage the desire of this active kindergartner, or soon-to-be kindergartner, to develop those muscles in a fun way.

Since girls tend to be the ones to take ballet, how about a gift of ballet lessons or maybe dancewear. This could include leotards, shoes, dresses, skirts, tutus, etc.

Uniforms or other gear for Campfire, Cub Scouts, Daisy Scouts (a part of Girl Scouts), whichever organization is appropriate for your child.

All of these gifts and activities encourage the development of those gross motor skills so needed to combat the rise in childhood obesity.
